Pearl Ring With Thin 1mm Band

Handmade 14 karat yellow gold band with small cultured pearl center.

Recently I custom made this pearl ring with a thin 1mm band.

This thin ring is the very definition of dainty and minimalist.

1mm Band, Too Thin?

1x1 ring in both width and thickness
1mm all the way around the ring.

This ring was made with a 1X1 millimeter design.

That means that it is both 1mm wide and 1mm thick.

While it is possible to craft such a delicate ring, it can come with it’s drawbacks.

If you are a person that is extra hard on their rings, then a 1mm option would probably not be the best decision.

1mm is also not recommended for rings with larger stones, or in engagement rings.

2mm pearl on thin gold band.
A 2mm pearl fixed in the center of the ring with 6 prongs.

In this particular instance, the 1mm band works quite well.

The center pearl size is only around 2mm in size, so there is virtually no weight to it. The thin band has no trouble supporting the stone.

The 1mm ring is also thin enough that it does a great job conveying that extra delicate look.

Thin Rings With Recycled Gold

At Modern Goldsmith, we source our raw materials from a distributor that has been certified by SCS Global Services.

This means you can have full confidence that the jewelry we make is sourced from 100% recycled metals.

There has already been enough gold, platinum, and palladium mined in our history to allow plenty of excess through recycled alloys.

There’s no reason for us to continue many of the mining practices that not only damage the earth, but also hurt the laborer in the process.

Custom Trillion Birthstone Ring

Trillion Birthstone Ring With Citrine and Peridot

This year for mother’s day, I designed a 14K yellow gold, custom trillion birthstone ring.

This ring features two birthstones, peridot and citrine, cut in trillion shapes and set into a petite yellow gold ring setting.

The ring design was made to have the the trillion stones sitting up right next to each other, with one of the points running horizontally with the ring band.

What are Trillion Shaped Stones?

2 Stone Mother's Ring with Peridot and Citrine.

Trillion gemstones, simply put, are triangle shaped. The biggest differentiation between a trillion and a trilliant or a triangle is that the term trillion is specifically reserved for gemstones.

Oftentimes trillion shaped gemstones are used as accent stones to a main center stone. In this case, the custom trillion birthstone ring was designed to have the stones themselves be the focal point. They get the lead role this time!

What is the birthstone for the month of August?

3 loose peridot gemstones. A trillion, pear, and oval shape.

The birthstone for the month of August is peridot. This stone is a beautiful yellowish green. It is found naturally in the earth and is also synthetically produced.

Peridot is only a 6.5 to 7 on the scale of mineral hardness, so it is considered “fair” for every day use. The stone should be shielded from heavy blows and worn with care. To learn more, visit the Gemological Institute of America.

What is the birthstone for the month of November?

6 loose citrine gemstones. An antique square, pear, round, and marquise shape.

The birthstone for the month of November is citrine. Citrine has many different shades of yellow, from light translucent yellow to darker shades.

Citrine is rated a 7 on the scale of mineral hardness and will hold up pretty well with every day wear. It is just a bit harder than peridot, but just that small increase can go a long way in a stones durability. To learn more, read about citrine on the GIA’s website.

Custom Trillion Birthstone Ring: Designed with CAD

A CAD rendering of a custom trillion birthstone ring.

The majority of the time when I do a custom ring, I will first design the ring in CAD. I love doing it this way because it gives my clients the opportunity to see what the ring will look like before it is cast in metal!

Once the clients have the renderings delivered to them, they can request any changes they feel necessary, and we can tweak the design as we go.

Once the design is looking just perfect, then we will proceed to the casting process! For more information, feel free to contact us!

The end result is a ring that looks nearly identical to the CAD renderings! The best part is, the real ring will always look better in person than in renderings, so if you are feeling excited about what you are seeing on a screen, just wait until you get the real piece of jewelry in your hands.

The weight of the gold, the reflection of the stones, the shine and shimmer. These are things that can only be handled and seen in person, and the end result is so satisfying!

‘Invisible Gallery’ Engagement Ring With Matching Wedding Band

By Leave a Comment

Custom platinum wedding set. Invisible gallery engagement ring with custom wedding band to match.

This custom platinum wedding set features an invisible gallery on the engagement ring and a custom matching wedding band.

The 2 carat center stone is supported by a hidden rail underneath that reveals diamonds on the sides. The bands were made to be on the thinner side to achieve a beautiful modern look.

Custom Matching Wedding Band

This platinum wedding set was designed to be a cohesive look between the engagement ring and wedding band.

The wedding band sits up perfectly next to the engagement ring and runs underneath the rail of the center stone. This allows the set to be worn together without any visible gaps between the two rings.

What is an ‘invisible gallery’?

A CAD rendering of what an invisible gallery engagement ring looks like.

The gallery of a ring is the section that is seen from the side, or looking through the ring. Many times this can be solid metal or some sort of decorative design.

In this case the ring was designed to have an “invisible gallery” or simply, no gallery at all.

This allows you to see the bottom quarter of the center stone, including the bottom point, or culet.

The rail that makes up the center stone setting was designed to have diamonds set down into the sides.

This is a really neat feature as these diamonds cannot be seen when looking down at the ring, however if you look at the ring from the sides, the shimmering diamonds reveal themselves.

Oval moissanite engagement ring with lab diamond accent stones. Custom made in 14KT yellow gold.

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to create a custom oval moissanite ring with a thin band.

The oval center stone is beautifully accented with round lab-diamonds. If you are new here, it’s no secret that we love this combination!

The Thin Band

The thin ring rail seamlessly transitions into the accent diamonds.

Thin rings have become extra popular recently. This has been fueled by the desire to have a ring that is dainty and also minimalist.

This ring was designed with an thin band, just 1.5 millimeters in thickness! The transition into the accent stones works beautifully as I used the same stone size as the thin band. It’s a seamless transition!

Computer Aided Design (CAD!)

A short video of the ring design in CAD.

Using CAD, we can see exactly how the ring will look before it is cast in the metal. Whenever I make custom rings, I always utilize this technology. This allows the client to see and collaborate with the goldsmith directly.

The CAD can be tweaked as you go to ensure it is just right. Once the final design in approved, the ring will then be turned into the real thing!

The Benefits of a Moissanite Engagement Ring

By 1 Comment

Moissanite—brilliant, environmentally friendly, and affordable.  Photo by Taylor Cross Photography

Recently I had the opportunity to create a beautiful and minimalist princess cut moissanite engagement ring. The platinum design features the combination of a 1 carat princess cut moissanite center stone with round lab-diamond accent stones.

In this post we will talk about the benefits of using moissanite for an engagement ring. Find out why moissanite has quickly become a favorite among couples getting engaged.

The Benefits Of Moissanite

Moissanite is one of the most popular diamond alternatives for engagement rings.

There are many reasons to love moissanite, Here are our top 5 benefits for using moissanite in an engagement ring!

#1. Moissanite is lab-grown.

What’s to love about lab-grown gemstones like moissanite? First and foremost, lab-grown stones are not mined in the earth, therefore they are environmentally friendly and 100% conflict free.

#2. Affordable.

With moissanite, you can get a beautiful gemstone that is far less expensive than a diamond. Why go broke on a diamond when it’s the symbolism that counts? Not to mention, they are just as lovely. (For pricing, contact us!)

#3. Moissanite is “hard” like a diamond.

While diamonds are the hardest minerals on earth—scoring a 10 out of 10 on the scale of mineral hardness—moissanite is also rated very well in terms of hardness. Moissanite is rated 9.25 out of 10 on the hardness scale!

Why is this important? Well hardness is an indication of how well a stone will hold up over the years. Moissanite is near the top!

#4. Moissanite is now colorless.

Not too long ago, moissanites gave off a bit of yellow tint. Later, they were improved and made “near colorless”. It didn’t stop there! Charles and Colvard, the premiere manufacturer of moissanite, recently introduced a true colorless stone known as the “Forever One” moissanite. See how they compare to the older stones.

By default, Modern Goldsmith always uses colorless moissanite in our engagement rings.

#5. Many shapes and sizes.

Moissanite is made in many different shapes and sizes! Whatever your personal preference is for stone shape and size, you’ll be able to find a beautiful colorless moissanite to fit your tastes.

The best of both worlds—combining moissanite and lab diamonds.

A thin band leading up to graduating accent stones.

There is something stunning about combining a moissanite center stone with lab-diamond accent stones. They are a beautiful and radiant combination. This is usually our go-to method when creating custom engagement rings.

The ring featured above is a minimalist engagement ring with a thin 1.3 millimeter band. 1.3 millimeters is very thin band! There used to be a time when I would rarely make anything thinner than a 2 millimeters when designing an engagement ring. There was also a time where nobody knew what moissanite was, either. Things are heading in a new and exciting direction.

Finally, the greatest benefit to using moissanite for an engagement ring (in our opinion) is knowing that you don’t need to fall into the tradition of buying a mined diamond!

You can create a beautiful ring that works for you and your partner, and save a lot of money in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions
