Convex Two-Tone Wedding Band

By Leave a Comment

two tone convex ring
The stark contrast of 18K yellow and platinum.

“Two-tone” wedding bands are referred to as such simply due to there being more than one metal color seen in a ring.

This custom two tone wedding band features a convex pattern on the outside of the ring to make it extra unique.

The two metal types in this ring are platinum for the middle section, and yellow gold for the inside and outside portions.

Convex Ring Design

Each custom ring is designed in CAD before it is cast in metal.

This ring features a unique convex pattern on the outside of the ring.

The platinum swoops up and down, forming a repeating pattern with a “point” every few millimeters.

Smoothed out convex cut outs.

The “points” were designed with comfort in mind.

While the CAD rendering shown earlier does show a sharper point at the crest of the design, the finished ring is actually more smooth looking.

Whenever we make custom rings, we ensure the ring is as comfortable as possible. This is done by forming and polishing the metal.

18kt + Platinum Two Tone Ring

High polished jewelry is quite reflective!

18kt yellow gold and platinum are a beautiful combination to get an extra rich two tone look.

One thing to be aware of is 18kt yellow gold by definition is 75% pure gold, so it has a richer yellow color than traditional 14kt.

Platinum serves as an excellent pairing to the softer yellow gold.

If you’re looking for a wedding band that is a bit more unique, a two tone option might be the perfect solution!

Custom Tulip Engagement Ring Setting

Inspired by natures beauty.

Recently I had the opportunity to make a custom tulip engagement ring setting with a Montana sapphire.

The reason for the term “tulip” ring setting has to do with the way the prongs are shaped and designed.

6 Prong Tulip Head

Tulip ring settings can be made a number of different ways. This particular ring was designed with rounded tops and six prongs.

Some tulip ring settings are made with 4 points of contact (basically similar to a 4-prong ring setting) and other tulip designs are not rounded at the top, rather come up to form a “claw” or point.

Tulip engagement ring settings can be custom made to fit many different stone types and sizes.

4 Prong vs 6 Prong Tulip Setting

Which option is best?

In our experience crafting custom tulip engagement rings, we have found that a 4 prong tulip is good for emerald, cushion, and princess cut stones.

When designing jewelry, we keep the end in mind. One aspect that we focus a lot on is symmetry. A princess cut or emerald cut will have 4 corners or points, thus a 4 prong tulip head will compliment it nicely.

When it comes to round or oval stones, both 4 and 6 prong tulip heads can work, although 6 prong is generally considered the safer option.

Choosing A Stone For A Tulip Ring Setting

There are many great options for stones. With this particular custom ring project, our client supplied their own sapphire sourced from Montana.

We are able to use our clients stones to craft beautiful engagement rings. Read more about using your own stone for a jewelry project.

If you don’t have your own stone to bring to the table, a goldsmith can help. We specialize in creating sustainable custom jewelry using lab grown diamonds, moissanite, and more. Contact us to learn more.

Floral Inspired

In conclusion, if you are looking for the perfect ring setting that gives off a floral vibe, a tulip ring setting is a stunning option.

Because of the openness of the head design, a lot of the stone is visible when looking through the ring.

Now that is an added bonus!

Alternating Diamond and Sapphire Wedding Set

By Leave a Comment

During the holiday season I completed an alternating diamond and sapphire wedding set. The rings were made in platinum and featured both lab-grown diamonds and lab-grown sapphires.

The really cool thing about this project was that we used the clients original half carat diamond for the center stone. As a goldsmith, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to redesign rings using existing materials.

As a result, clients can get something new that they love without completely sacrificing the essence of the original ring!

The Wedding Band

The wedding band features alternating diamonds and sapphires. The band was made with a twist design. Additionally, one side of the twist has the alternating stones and the other side is just the high polished platinum.

Platinum is an excellent choice for wedding rings because it holds up very well over time. It’s also perfect for those with sensitive skin as platinum is truly hypoallergenic.

The Engagement Ring

The engagement ring design was make with a 3 stone look for the center. The center stone is the original diamond from the client, and the lab-grown accent sapphires sit on each side.

Further down the sides of the ring we have the same twisting band with stones on one side. We decided against doing alternating diamonds and sapphires in this portion as to let the focus remain on the 3 stone center.

Custom Made Wedding Set

The great thing about custom jewelry is we are able to use any of your existing jewelry to create something new and beautiful. For example, if your original wedding set was made in yellow gold but you now want it in white gold, the set can be created again but this time in a different color!

In addition, if you wanted to redesign your wedding set but use the original materials, that is an option too! For all custom inquiries, just contact us!

3 Stone Engagement Ring — Round Diamond and Trillion Sapphires

By Leave a Comment

Platinum 3 stone engagement ring with round .50 carat lab-diamond center stone and .25 carat blue sapphire trillion accent stones.

Looking for a 3 stone engagement ring? How about one with a round center and trillion (triangle) accent stones?

The 3 stone engagement ring style has been making quite the comeback in recent years. There is something classic and lovely about having a single accent stone on each side of the center.

There are so many things to love about this design. Keep reading to see our favorite surprise feature of this ring.

The brilliant combination of blue and white.

To create a stunning contrast, our client decided to use blue sapphires as the accent stones. These are trillion shaped sapphires that have the bottom points facing horizontally toward the band.

The diamond and sapphires hug up snugly and tightly against each other. It is always important for a custom engagement to have a nice flow. One way we decided to do this was by tucking the sapphires slightly under the center diamond and having them angle downwards. As a result, a modern and beautiful three stone look was achieved.

Love Knot (Surprise!)

Knot design worked into the architecture of the ring. When looking down it remains hidden, but is revealed when look through the ring.

My client had the really cool idea of wanting to incorporate a Turkish love knot into the engagement ring. The design was to take the flat look of the knot and “bend” it down each side of the ring.

As a result, the prongs for the stones were incorporated into the middle of the knot. It’s this kind of customization that really get’s us excited!

Square Shank

A square shank, also referred to as a “European Shank”

This ring features a square shank at the bottom to help counterbalance the weight in the top of the ring. Also referred to as Euro shanks, this design is a really nice option that many people don’t know about.

What are the benefits of a square or Euro shank? The first reason people choose to get a Euro shank is so that their ring will not spin on their finger. Oftentimes when the weight of a ring in unevenly distributed on the top of the ring (due to heavy stones), the ring will have the tendency to flop from side to side. The heaviness of a square shank, especially on the corners, can act as a great counter balance.

Platinum 6 Prong Solitaire With Twist Shank

I recently had the opportunity to complete this beautiful platinum ring. The ring was made with a 6 prong head and a twist shank.

Ring Materials

It truly is a joy making an engagement ring out of sustainable materials. This ring is is both conflict-free and environmentally friendly.

  • 100% recycled platinum
  • 1.25 carat colorless moissanite
  • 1.2 mm lab-grown diamond accent stones

You Dream It, We Build It

Turn any sketch into a real piece of jewelry

The ring design and concept was sketched by my client who has a background in engineering. I was beyond impressed with the sketch he drew up! It provided more than enough detail to ensure we were going to design the ring just the way he wanted.

From sketch to reality

Using CAD software we were able to take the sketch and turn it into a working 3-D model. Once the 3-D model was grown in wax it was then cast in platinum.

After the ring was cast the next step was the stone setting. I set the smaller lab-grown diamonds first and then finished the ring by setting the “Forever One” colorless moissanite. [Read more…] about Platinum 6 Prong Solitaire With Twist Shank
